Six Good Mental Health Tips

Mental Health Awareness is important as current statistics suggest that one in four of us will suffer from a mental health problem at some point during our lives. If we were told that these were our odds for suffering from, for example, dementia, we would probably be demanding more research be carried out into its causes ... and fast. Unfortunately, mental health problems aren't so openly discussed.

Given that mental ill health is one of the main causes of time off work, good mental health affects the individual and the employer. If both were committed to try to reduce this statistic, the benefits would be felt on a personal as well as an economic scale.

Here are some useful tips either for individuals or for employers to offer to their staff:

Be Positive - research has proven that negative thinking is energy draining and can increase your susceptibility to certain illnesses. Trying to be more optimistic doesn't mean ignoring anything unpleasant, it means focusing on the positive elements of any given situation (which becomes easier with practice).Get Enough Rest - everyone is different, but ensure that you get enough sleep for you as sleep deprivation can increase a number of health risks. For a better night's sleep try to set a regular bedtime, relax beforehand in a warm bath and don't take your paperwork or laptop into the bedroom with you.Check Your Support Network - humans are social animals, we need to feel supported, valued and connected. So by developing a strong support network, you will have trusted people to help, support and encourage you through tough times. Remember, of course, that this is a two-way process and your own wellbeing can be improved by helping others.Exercise Regularly - the link between the mind and the body has been well researched. We know that exercise can increase strength and relieve tense muscles. However, it also helps us to release endorphins which can energize us as well as improve our mood and sleep quality.Monitor Your Nutrition - the food we eat affects both our energy and our mood. Regular healthy meals can increase our energy, lower our risk of developing certain diseases and positively influence our mood.Get Your Daily Sunlight - not always easy in some climates but it is suggested that 10-15 minutes daylight every day can help to lift your mood. Why not try a quick lunchtime stroll or walk to the shop instead of taking the car?Consultants In Equilibrium , have developed a one day course entitled Mental Health Awareness Training . The course is designed to help managers, supervisors and team leaders understand the different behaviours associated with mental health conditions within the workplace, as well as ways of managing and containing those behaviours.
